A new 18 GHz room temperature electron cyclotron resonance ion source for highly charged ion beams
2020
An innovative 18 GHz HIISI (Heavy Ion Ion Source Injector) room temperature Electron Cyclotron Resonance (ECR) ion source (ECRIS) has been designed and constructed at the Department of Physics, University of Jyväskylä (JYFL), for the nuclear physics program of the JYFL Accelerator Laboratory. The primary objective of HIISI is to increase the intensities of medium charge states (M/Q ≅ 5) by a factor of 10 in comparison with the JYFL 14 GHz ECRIS and to increase the maximum usable xenon charge state from 35+ to 44+ to serve the space electronics irradiation testing program. HIISI is equipped with a refrigerated permanent magnet hexapole and a noncylindrical plasma chamber to achieve very stro…
The effect of plasma instabilities on the background impurities in charge breeder ECRIS
2017
International audience; Experimental observations of plasma instabilities in the 14.5 GHz PHOENIX charge breeder ECRIS are summarized. It has been found that the injection of 133Cs+ or 85Rb+ into oxygen discharge of the CB-ECRIS can trigger electron cyclotron instabilities, which results to sputtering of the surfaces exposed to the plasma, followed by up to an order of magnitude increase of impurity currents in the extracted n+ charge state distribution. The transition from stable to unstable plasma regime is caused by gradual accumulation and ionization of Cs/Rb altering the discharge parameters in 10 - 100 ms time scale, not by a prompt interaction between the incident ion beam and the EC…
Improve the dielectric properties of PrSrNi0.8Mn0.2O4 compounds by longer mechanical milling
2018
Abstract Structural and dielectric properties of PrSrNi 0.8 Mn 0.2 O 4 ceramics elaborated by a rapid method combining mechanical milling and heat treatment were studied for the first time. The raw materials are milled at different times ( t mil = 0, 5, 10, 20 and 30 h) and annealed at 1300 °C for 8 h to produce a revealed PrSrNi 0.8 Mn 0.2 O 4 single phase, exhibiting tetragonal structure with space group I 4/ mmm . This result was confirmed by using the TEM/ED pattern for sample milled at 30 h using the [001] orientation. The corresponding lattice images show a well-ordered compound, indicating the absence of stacking faults and the growth of the crystallites. Giant dielectric response …
Stable and simple quantitative phase-contrast imaging by Fresnel biprism
2018
Digital holographic (DH) microscopy has grown into a powerful nondestructive technique for the real-time study of living cells including dynamic membrane changes and cell fluctuations in nanometer and sub-nanometer scales. The conventional DH microscopy configurations require a separately generated coherent reference wave that results in a low phase stability and a necessity to precisely adjust the intensity ratio between two overlapping beams. In this work, we present a compact, simple, and very stable common-path DH microscope, employing a self-referencing configuration. The microscope is implemented by a diode laser as the source and a Fresnel biprism for splitting and recombining the be…

Optimization of a laser ion source for $^{163}$Ho isotope separation
2019
To measure the mass of the electron neutrino, the “Electron Capture in Holmium-163” (ECHo) collaboration aims at calorimetrically measuring the spectrum following electron capture in 163Ho. The success of the ECHo experiment depends critically on the radiochemical purity of the 163Ho sample, which is ion-implanted into the calorimeters. For this, a 30 kV high transmission magnetic mass separator equipped with a resonance ionization laser ion source is used. To meet the ECHo requirements, the ion source unit was optimized with respect to its thermal characteristics and material composition by means of the finite element method thermal-electric calculations and chemical equilibrium simulation…
Low-temperature luminescence of catangasite single crystals under excitation by vacuum ultraviolet synchrotron radiation
2020
The luminescent properties of Ca3TaGa3Si2O14 (CTGS, catangasite) single crystals have been studied by means of the vacuum ultraviolet excitation spectroscopy utilizing synchrotron radiation from 1.5 GeV storage ring of MAX IV synchrotron facility. Two emission bands at 320 nm (3.87 eV) and 445 nm (2.78 eV) have been detected. Examining excitation spectra in vacuum ultraviolet spectral range, the 320 nm emission band was explained as the emission band of self-trapped exciton in CTGS single crystal. Its atomic structure is discussed. It is also proposed that the 445 nm (2.78 eV) emission in the CTGS is due to the F centers, which have shown a well-resolved excitation (absorption) band at 5.1 …
Ab initio calculations of structural, electronic and vibrational properties of BaTiO3 and SrTiO3 perovskite crystals with oxygen vacancies
2020
The first-principles (ab initio) computations of the structural, electronic, and phonon properties have been performed for cubic and low-temperature tetragonal phases of BaTiO3 and SrTiO3 perovskite crystals, both stoichiometric and non-stoichiometric (with neutral oxygen vacancies). Calculations were performed with the CRYSTAL17 computer code within the linear combination of atomic orbitals approximation, using the B1WC advanced hybrid exchange-correlation functional of the density-functional-theory (DFT) and the periodic supercell approach. Various possible spin states of the defective systems were considered by means of unrestricted (open shell) DFT calculations. It was demonstrated that…
Enhancement of the dielectric response through Al-substitution in La1.6Sr0.4NiO4 nickelates
2016
The structures and dielectric properties of La1.6Sr0.4Ni1−xAlxO4 (x = 0, 0.2 and 0.4) ceramics elaborated using the Pechini method were studied for the first time. The same unique tetragonal phase was found in all compounds. The lattice parameters were found using Rietveld refinement. The surface morphology characterization and elemental analysis of these samples were respectively carried out using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). A giant dielectric response was observed in these ceramics, and one dielectric relaxation was found. The substitution of nickel with aluminum results in a colossal dielectric constant value (>106). The dielectric l…
Quartz resonators for penning traps toward mass spectrometry on the heaviest ions
2020
We report on cyclotron frequency measurements on trapped 206,207Pb+ ions by means of the non-destructive Fourier-transform ion-cyclotron-resonance technique at room temperature. In a proof-of-principle experiment using a quartz crystal instead of a coil as a resonator, we have alternately carried out cyclotron frequency measurements for 206Pb+ and 207Pb+ with the sideband coupling method to obtain 21 cyclotron-frequency ratios with a statistical uncertainty of 6 × 10−7. The mean frequency ratio R¯ deviates by about 2σ from the value deduced from the masses reported in the latest Atomic Mass Evaluation. We anticipate that this shift is due to the ion–ion interaction between the simultaneousl…
